007 Interesting Facts About The Man Who Brought Bond to Life

James Bond was the original action hero, immortalized in the pages of the novels by British author Ian Fleming. However, Bond became an iconic screen figure too, thanks in no small part to the charismatic Scottish actor Sean Connery, who was the first to utter the legendary line ‘Bond, James Bond’ on screen.

 

Connery died recently aged 90 and as well as being the quintessential action entertainment hero James Bond, had a long and career. Here are interesting facts about the man how brought Bond to life

   

1. His full name is Thomas Sean Connery and went by the name Tommy in his youth and was even referred to as Big Tam in his native Edinburgh. He later decided to go by his middle name of Sean instead.

 

2. Connery was always a tall and imposing figure. At age 18, he was six foot two inches tall.

 

3. He came from a working-class background and his first job was as a milkman at the age of 16. His father was a factory worker and his mother a cleaner, so he knows the value of hard work from an early age.

    

4. He joined the British Navy and trained as a gunner for the anti-aircraft crew, however, he had to be later discharged from the Navy on medical grounds.

 

5. Connery was an accomplished soccer player and he was offered the chance to play for Manchester United by their legendary manager and fellow Scot Matt Busby. Connery, however, turned it down knowing that the career of a professional athlete was a short one.

 

6. He nearly missed out on the role of Bond to legendary English actor Cary Grant. However, Grant could only commit to one movie while the producers had a series of films in mind.

 

7. The Bond producers held open auditions, but couldn’t find a suitable candidate before inviting Connery to try out for the role and the rest is history.

Famous Fictional Captains

Here’s a quick look at two adventurous ship Captain straight from the pages of fiction.

Captain Ahab. Brought to life by Herman Miller in his 1851 classic Moby Dick, Ahab captained the whaling ship Pequod as it sailed on a voyage for revenge in search of the elusive white whale. In a previous journey, Ahab lost his leg to Moby Dick and wore a prosthetic made of whale bone. Blinded by his hatred and thirst for vengeance, Ahab’s reckless abandonment of any and all caution seal his rather unfortunate fate. The character has been immortalized in popular culture and has even served as inspiration for other notable characters, such as J. M. Barrie’s Captain Hook.

Captain Nemo. A creation of Jules Verne, Captain Nemo (also known as Prince Dakkar) made his first appearance in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and then again in The Mysterious Island (1874). Verne used the character a third time in his 1882 play Journey Through the Impossible, although it was merely a brief cameo. Since his initial publications, Captain Nemo has appeared in multiple adaptations of Verne’s novels, but he’s also been borrowed by other authors in their own works, like Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Philip José Farmer's The Other Log of Phileas Fogg. The mysterious captain of The Nautilus, a submarine that roams the depths of the sea, Nemo is a scientific genius fuelled by vengeance and hatred of imperialism.

What’s Coming Up in The DC Universe

Can’t get your fill of the DC Extended Universe? You’re in luck, the next couple of years are set to be big ones for the comic book company as they compete with Marvel for their share of superhero screen dominance.

The film will be directed by Patty Jenkins, who wrote it with Geoff Johns and David Callaham from a story written by Johns and Jenkins.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - Directed by Cathy Yan from a screenplay by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey will see Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn, as she teams up with Black Canary, the Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save Cassandra Cain from Gotham City crime lord Black Mask. Set for release in February 2020, fans are already eagerly anticipating its arrival.

Aquaman 2 – Although it’s only scheduled for release in December 2022, it’s no surprise that Jason Momoa’s popular portrayal of Aquaman earned the franchise a sequel. Few details have been announced for the project, but David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will be back to write the script and it will be produced by Aquaman director James Wan and Peter Safran.

Fun Facts About Fight Club

A fan favorite that enjoys enduring success to this very day, Fight Club was a masterpiece of a film with a continued cult following. Here are three interesting facts about the film that you may or may not have known.

It started as a novel. Despite a drastically different ending, Fight Club manages to stay true to the plot, themes, and progression of Chuck Palahniuk’s debut novel of the same name. The all-star cast including Brad Pitt and Ed Norton seem perfectly suited to the characters they play, and the movie (much like the novel) is nothing short of a non-stop thrill from start to finish.

Even the wardrobe was R-rated. The MPAA was rather tough on Fight Club, and as a result many scenes were cut from the movie in order for it to maintain an R-rating. That said, the MPAA may have missed a ince detail in Brad Pitt’s wardrobe, as the tank top he wears in one of the pivotal final scenes is actually made up of various pornographic images. Oops.

The movie is absolutely full of Easter eggs. It may take the most perceptive of fans to notice them, but Fight Club is full of amusing Easter eggs. For example, one scene in the movie is filmed in front of a marquee for the movie Seven Years in Tibet, which of course, stars Brad Pitt.
